A living demonstration
NSW Government SBIR Field testing completed
After years of research, development and full-scale field testing, Eco Shield Systems is moving L-ESS from experimental prototype toward real-world building applications.
Philosophy
A new era of urban rewilding
Nature is traditionally left behind in modern architecture and construction. We’re creating future-focused cities by shaping buildings that work for people, planet and animals, whilst providing solutions for natural cooling, reducing carbon and increasing biodiversity.
Our approach
We exist to usher in a new era of urban ecology and design, to flip the model and find new ways to shape the built environment to suit plants, animals, then humans (and not the other way around)
A living system for urban rewilding
Rewilding aims to restore ecosystem interactions, allowing nature to shape its future. Small catalytic interventions are used to embrace uncertainty and trigger larger ecological transformations.
L-ESS
L-ESS (Living Eco Shield System) is a new vertical greening system that combines architecture, engineering, horticulture, ecology, and sensor technology.
Suspended away from the building, it creates a secondary environmental layer that maintains views and daylight while providing access for maintenance.
Measurable Performance
Verified results
Through the NSW SBIR Urban Heat Island Challenge, L-ESS has undergone full-scale field testing to measure how a living building envelope can mitigate urban heat through shading, evapotranspiration and microclimate formation.
16–20°C cooler surfaces
Testing demonstrates substantial reductions in host building surface temperatures and cooling-energy demand, while creating a cooler microclimate around the building envelope.
Habitat by design
Beyond thermal performance, the living façade is establishing habitat. Birds, reptiles, frogs and insects have been observed inhabiting the system, demonstrating its potential to integrate ecological function directly into the building envelope.
